It has come to my notice that a professor of organic chemistry Árpád Furka,
resident in Hungary showed up for the Nobel-prize or was recommended for
this high recognition by some organization. He claims to be the inventor of an
entirely new accelerating method used for "combinatoric research" in the US
and other western countries for about the last ten years: he called the method
"positional scanning", and declaires that he invented it in 1982, together with
the so called "combinatoric chemistry". When asked during his public
appearences if he had applied for a patent for this remarkable method, he
gave various answers, like "he forgot to take out a patent", or "he had no
money to do so", or "he was told by patent attornies, that only appliances can
be have patented, methods cannot be". Radio or video recordings of the
above declarations can be put at your disposal.

Meanwhile the truth is that it was me, the undersigned András Tejfalussy, who
invented the "positional scanning" method to optimum-control the
technologies and properties of trial materials. I had it patented with priority in
Hungary on 22 September 1970 entitled "Method and apparatus for the
optimalisation of technologies". Between 1970 and 1978 based on this did I
invent and made public under the title of "Gradient Test Mapping Method"
the new scientific method for optimum controlling, and between 1976-1980
the "wawe analyser" program, and their whole derivative system, that has
been developed to this day. Important part of it is a new program, interesting
also from the standpoint of mathematics and geometry: the fluent
multidimensional (as to technic, data handling and visualization) space
forming method.

Between 1967 and 1977 the industrial research intsitute I worked for and also
the Agricultural Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
(MTA) at Martonvásár recognised my inventions as "service inventions", and
paid fo the foreign patent fees.

Based on more than ten of my research technical inventions I've got over fifty
foreign patents ( American, British, German, Canadian, Swedish, Austrian,
Russian Japanese ones among them) for my research accelerating method
and its procedural programs and apparatuses and their material handling and
measuring systems.

My method is employable in almost all fields of research: in pharmacology,
industry, agriculture and environmental studies, to be used to accelerate on
an unprecedented scale and to make more precise the measurements (as to
acting-contraacting and optimum controlling) of research and control, and
also to make costs lower.

Instead of the old "random-positioning method" we use this new, big-scaled,
harmonic "anti-random multifactorial scanning" in the scientific companies
founded by me.

But how did Árpád Furka put his hands on my patented research accelerating
method which was also a new scientific optimizing and research organizing
program?

In 1976 the Csepel Metal Works (Csepeli Fémmû) where I was working
firmed a contract with the Organic Chemistry Institute of the Eötvös Lóránt
University of Sciences (ELTE), where a certain Dr András Kótai and his team
was doing research with my method. I had even made some publications
together with them, published in English.

In a short time though Dr Kótai died, and eventually I was released from my
workplace after ten years of hard work during which I received various
decorations of the time like "Excellent Inventor", "Excellent Innovator",
"For the Developing of the Scaling Measurements" and other great
distinctions nationwide.

After the death of Dr Kótai the whole research material got into the hands of
Árpád Furka who was also working in the Organic Chemistry Institute of the
ELTE. It took about six years for him to get a grip of my method, and then he
tried to have it patented, but it failed, as it had already been patented by me,
so he had to draw back his application.

What there is today to be seen on the website of Árpád Furka, is but a badly
modified variant of my method, reshaped in order to avoid its being attacked
by the law.

According to Árpád Furka, he sent the description of my method as his own
invention called "positional scanning" for publication to the American
Science monthly. There it was shelved idly for about one and a half year while
it was allegedly stolen, and the Americans presented it and got it patented in
pharmaceutical themes, because with my accelerating method chemical
compounds can be produced serially.

In the acquaintanceship of Árpád Furka there are companies, for example the
Hungarian COM-GENEX, which make several million dollars yearly using
my method, while I haven't ever got a dime for it.

In the course of the events after a point they could obtain further apparatus
patents only for automatic-operating aparatuses controlled by my method.
I've got such a patent jointly with the MTA's Agricultural Research Institute at
Martonvásár (see the attached US patent). Alas neither the MTA pays for it,
though their plant physiology researches have been accelerated by magnitude
orders, using my method variously in their programs since

1974. (It was in 1974 that they borrowed my patent of 1970, so they have been
misappropriating my program for 30 years.)

Similarly has taken advantage of another invention of mine the Computer
Research Institute of the MTA (MTA-SZTAKI). Its staff operating at the
Berkeley University in California (US) has been developing my invention
patented in 1978 under the name "visualizing analyzator", a
multidimensional computer system working on a new principle; this they have
in the meantime re-named "cellular…", and act as if the invention had been
theirs.

And of course neither they pay me my due.

Another one of my 20 inventions, the "RABBI decision-program" has been
used (re-named as "Expert Choice") without even mentioning my name, for
example by the following users:

T & T/Bell Labs, Eastman Kodak, Stanford University, Citibank, Ford Motor
Co., US Air Force, Conoco Oil, IRS, NASA, World Bank.

While for the last 13 years I've had no paid jobs, I have still lots of research
programs and programs connected to them, and I have further ideas as well,
but I don't think it would be worth while getting them patented, as they
probably would be misappropriated too.

So far I didn't want to sell my inventions abroad, hoping that the Hungarian
people should profit by them, but it hasn't turned out well. I share the ill luck
of many great Hungarian inventors who cant find paying appliers for their
best ideas, and whose inventions finally will be simply stolen by big firms.

I ask the highly esteemed Nobel-Prize Committee not to give the Prize to
either Árpád Furka or those to whom he might have handed over my research
accelerating program, as it would mean the devaluation of the Prize if it could
be received undeservedly.

At the same time I ask the Committee to help me find firms which would be
willing to apply the research accelerating programs based on my invention.
I am 61 years old, but still full of useful ideas and perfectly able to develop
them.

In the course of my work I have made shocking discoveries of the cause of
some problems in agriculture and public health, but I haven't been able to
find a forum to set them forth, because the chemical factories and other
international firms impeded it.

In support of what I have written to you I enclose the information material
sent to the president of the MTA and to the Hungarian Government, and I
also enclose a list of some of my patents got abroad, and the joint publication
